Kenyan Carbon Projects Directory
The flagship assets behind the developer ranking on this site — the projects a buyer researching Kenyan credits will run into first.
Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.
| Project | Developer | Type | Registry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kasigau Corridor REDD+ | Wildlife Works | Avoided deforestation | Verra (VCS) — holder of the first VCS REDD+ credits ever issued (2011) |
| Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project | Northern Rangelands Trust | Rangeland soil carbon | Verra (VCS) — suspension then June 2026 reinstatement after independent review* |
| BURN cookstove programme | BURN Manufacturing | Clean cooking | Gold Standard / Verra |
| East Africa Grassland Restoration Project | Boomitra | Soil carbon | Verra — registration completed August 2025 |
| Western Kenya agroforestry programme | Vi Agroforestry | Agroforestry | Verra |
| Mikoko Pamoja | community project (Plan Vivo) | Mangrove blue carbon | Plan Vivo |
| Kenyan household cookstove projects | co2balance | Clean cooking | Gold Standard |
* Controversy note: the Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project has drawn sustained community criticism, including Survival International's "Blood Carbon" campaign, which alleges inadequate community consent, grazing restrictions on pastoralists, and human-rights accusations against rangers, and which disputes the independence of the review preceding the June 2026 reinstatement. The Kasigau Corridor project was separately reviewed by Verra after November 2023 sexual-abuse allegations reported by The Guardian; Verra concluded on 1 February 2024 that required remedial actions had been taken. How to buy from these projects
Volume buyers can approach developers directly; everyone else goes through portfolio managers (Climate Impact Partners) or marketplaces (Hummingbirds raised $59 million in February 2026 for African sales). Before committing, run our vetting checklist and read the regulatory context in Regulation.
