Kenya Carbon Project Developers: Profiles
Profiles of the carbon project developers most often shortlisted for Kenyan and East African projects. Ranked order and reasons are on the home page; this page goes deeper per developer.
Last updated: November 2026. Figures and regulatory details reflect publicly reported information as of that date; verify current rules with the relevant registry or regulator before transacting.
BURN Manufacturing
Type: clean cooking · Registries: Gold Standard, Verra · Base: Nairobi, Kenya
Efficient stoves are built and sold at scale here; carbon finance is what keeps them affordable for households. The TIME100 Most Influential Companies citation came in 2024. Buyers after large, audited cookstove volumes with a household-health story start with this profile.
Wildlife Works
Type: REDD+ avoided deforestation · Registry: Verra (VCS) · Project: Kasigau Corridor, between Tsavo East and Tsavo West
A reference point for forest REDD+ worldwide: the Kasigau Corridor project produced the first VCS REDD+ credits ever issued, back in 2011, and has run community employment and biodiversity programmes ever since. See the controversies section below for the 2023 allegations and Verra's review.
Northern Rangelands Trust
Type: rangeland soil carbon · Registry: Verra (VCS) · Project: Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project
A community-conservancy rangeland carbon programme of global significance — and one with a contested public record. Verra suspended the project, then reinstated it in June 2026 after an independent review, and advocacy groups remain critical (details below). Request current registry status and review outcomes before contracting.
Boomitra
Type: soil carbon with satellite/AI measurement · Registry: Verra · Footprint: East Africa including Kenya
Smallholder networks supply the acres; satellite and AI supply the measurement. Verra registered the company's East Africa Grassland Restoration Project in August 2025 — currently a leading example of technology-measured soil carbon.
Vi Agroforestry
Type: agroforestry · Registry: Verra · Footprint: western Kenya (Lake Victoria basin)
Tree planting and farm productivity financed by carbon, delivered with smallholder farmer associations over decades — one of the longest-running programmes in the region.
Mikoko Pamoja
Type: mangrove blue carbon · Registry: Plan Vivo · Location: Gazi Bay, south coast
Among the first community-led blue carbon projects Plan Vivo certified anywhere. Volumes are small; governance visibility is exemplary.
co2balance
Type: household cookstoves · Registry: Gold Standard · Footprint: Kenya (among others)
2023 is the year to remember here: journalists followed one of its Kenyan credits from issuance to a retirement in England — a rare public, end-to-end view of the audit chain.
Controversies & criticism
Two profiles above carry contested histories that a diligent buyer should read in full:
- Wildlife Works (Kasigau Corridor). SOMO and the Kenya Human Rights Commission published allegations in November 2023 of sexual abuse and harassment by senior project staff, reported by The Guardian on 7 November 2023. Verra reviewed the projects and concluded on 1 February 2024 that Wildlife Works had taken the actions required to address the alleged harm, leaving the projects active on the registry; the reporting organisations called the review inadequate.
- Northern Rangelands Trust (NKRCP). Survival International's "Blood Carbon" campaign alleges the project advanced without adequate community consent, imposed grazing restrictions on pastoralists, and depends on rangers accused of human-rights abuses. Survival International also says it pressed Verra to suspend the project and disputes the independence of the review that preceded the June 2026 reinstatement.
Regional and market actors
- UpEnergy — East and West African developer; issued Africa's first electric-cooking credits under Gold Standard's metered methodology (March 2025).
- Climate Impact Partners — international portfolio manager packaging African credits for corporate buyers.
- Hummingbirds — France-based marketplace; raised $59 million in February 2026 to scale carbon-credit sales in Kenya and across Africa.
